Stop the Anti-Divx Madness! Posted by Bryan P. [IP: 152.163.207.79] on November 18, 1998 at 22:47:30: In Reply to: Stop the Anti-Divx Madness! posted by David on November 16, 1998 at 03:18:14: You can stand on the theory of rental vs. purchase all you want. However, even given the correctness of your arguments, there are still several fatal flaws with DIVX. 1) The format is technically inferior. Have you ever seen an O'scope of a DIVX signal? If an amp or preamp looked like that, even WalMart wouldn't sell it. I have seen and listened to DIVX vs. open DVD. No comparison. Video and audio are VASTLY superior and easy to see on anything bigger than a 13" cheapie TV. 2.) When I rent furniture, I don't have to plug it into my phone line and disrupt other services so they know how much time I spend sitting on it or what I am wearing when I am there. That is my time in my home and none of their business 3.) As you stated, the discs are serialized to ONE player. What if I have more than one player? Should I have to pay twice? I don't have to when I lease a car, house, or furniture simply because I may have more than one driver or child. That is just wrong. I know, I know..."Buy the gold licence." Kind of defeats the whole purpose of the rental paradigm, doesn't it? 4.)While the "convenience" of not having to return the disc may be appealing to some, I enjoy going back to the store to pick up another I may not have had a chance to get before. 5.) I use my CD collection as reference material when evaluating prospective equipment purchases. I plan to do the same with my DVDs. Call me a snob if you want, but I am certainly not going to shop at Circuit City for my audio/video equipment. Who else is carrying these players? Even if I did, I can't play them on their players unless I gold them all. Sounds like a flexible, easy to use solution to me! All that and I get the privilege of paying an extra $100 for the inferior technology and an extra $10-$15 for a gold disc vs. an open DVD via the web. Personally, I don't rent cars, houses, or furniture. I like to own things. I want to get something for my money. I prefer to buy quality merchandise that will outlast the payment period and still be in great working condition. I don't think I could handle all the "convenience" DIVX offers. Thanks anyway. By the way, are you a lawyer???
