Stop the Anti-Divx Madness! Posted by David [IP: 207.235.31.249] on November 19, 1998 at 03:08:02: In Reply to: Stop the Anti-Divx Madness! posted by Bryan P. on November 18, 1998 at 22:47:30: : ...there are still several fatal flaws with DIVX. If you've bothered to read my previous posts, you'll see I never favored Divx (I'm a DVD man myself), but simply pointed out reasons why someone would want to choose it. Indeed, one thing I've learned through this thread is the increasing availability of DVD rentals, which--if available in your area--completely negates the raison d'etre of Divx. : 1) The format is technically inferior. No argument here. This is why I'm firmly in the DVD camp. : 2.) When I rent furniture, I don't have to plug it into my phone line and disrupt other services so they know how much time I spend sitting on it or what I am wearing when I am there. That is my time in my home and none of their business No one complained when you had to plug the DSS into the phone jack for pay-per-view movies, which is all Divx's modem does: Divx is PAY-PER-VIEW, a concept people could handle before there was a disc (oooh, the evil disc). And if you think no one knows what DVDs you're renting, or what DVDs you're buying, you're living in a dream world. The only differences is WHO knows. Who cares? : 3.) As you stated, the discs are serialized to ONE player. What if I have more than one player? Should I have to pay twice? I don't have to when I lease a car, house, or furniture simply because I may have more than one driver or child. That is just wrong. I know, I know..."Buy the gold licence." Kind of defeats the whole purpose of the rental paradigm, doesn't it? I know how easy it is to get worked up over this. I didn't come up with the idea, and I am only suggesting that we leave the option open to those who wish it. I would NEVER buy Divx myself; I'm too into the state of the art: progressive-scan component outputs (coming soon or never), DTS output, 24-bit 96 kHz audio support, enhanced for widescreen titles, etc. : 4.)While the "convenience" of not having to return the disc may be appealing to some, I enjoy going back to the store to pick up another I may not have had a chance to get before. I'm with you there; I like to browse through the titles in a rental store. Again, Divx is a solution for those WITHOUT DVD rental shops available in their area (though my solution would be NetFlix or something similar). : Personally, I don't rent cars, houses, or furniture. I like to own things. I want to get something for my money. I prefer to buy quality merchandise that will outlast the payment period and still be in great working condition. You know, I never asked anyone for their personal choices. I asked that people of OTHER opinions be given THEIR choices. But part of your reason for purchasing vs. renting, that of guaranteeing "great" working condition, is a feature of Divx, which is a rental you can take care of in your own home. : I don't think I could handle all the "convenience" DIVX offers. Thanks anyway. By the way, are you a lawyer??? I'm a pediatrician, the near-antithesis of a lawyer. And I never asked you to buy Divx. I never said I'm going to buy Divx. And if you can stop splitting for a second (belief that anything is either all-good or all-bad), you might see that just because I don't want the format killed doesn't mean I'm somehow anti-DVD, and that Divx DOESN'T have to die for DVD to flourish.
