The world would be a better place...

Posted by Brad [IP: 139.95.251.1] on November 19, 1998 at 20:29:56:

...if important decisions regarding politics, economics, human rights, matters of state, personal property rights, etc. were first required to be discussed in forums such as this one.

I have just read every single post in the thrilling e-conversation about Divx below (Stop the Anti-Divx Madness!). As I read each post in chronological order, I began to realize that this is the type of level-headed (with the exception of a few snide personal attacks) correspondance that is needed to fire up the public about issues that concern them. I propose a web site now be called www.world-forum.com (the URL is available, I checked) in which each person on this green Earth is able to comment on any and every aspect of their lives and topics they feel are important to their existence on this planet.

Is it fair for us to deny the world of such an opportunity to express their beliefs the way we jaded home theater enthusiasts do? And we are jaded, each and everyone of us. I am 21 years old, and I have been recently disgusted at the way my generation takes for granted the rights over which people have died to maintain. I am more knowledgeable in the home theater arena than I am in the constitution of our country. I am not proud of this, but I am aware of it. All matters concerning our lives...things that truly matter (no, watching 101 Dalmations sixteen times a week does not qualify) should be easily and regularly debated and discussed as is the Lexicon DC-1. Where do I go to debate the matters before the Congress (they are questioning Starr as I type) as easily as I do on this forum? And if there already is such a place, why don't I care to visit? Is it just me, or is there something really wrong with the world right now? (or is it just the United States)

That said, I disagree with nearly every aspect of Divx. I do not want to pay $4.50 for 48-hour rental period, without the option to go out and buy an open DVD to play in my Divx player. I do not want to contribute to yet another potential monopoly situation, regardless of whether or not I already contribute to one by using the browser I am on right now. I do not want to pay for a 48-hour viewing period that applies only to my living room (can't take it to a friend's house, can't take it to another room, can't do anything without paying more, more, more). I don't want to have the "choice" between Divx and DVD, because it confuses my purchase and puts me on the spot (or rather the CC salesperson puts the spot on) to decide if I like $4.50 better than $25.00 without any input from another salesperson at another (type of) store.

Oh yeah, what happens if I forget to pick up my Divx rental disc at a "convenient" time of the day, and I want to watch the new release "I Really do Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Honestly" at 11:30 PM at night. I do believe I can walk right into Blockbuster at that hour and rent it right then, but Circuit City has closed it's big red doors by then.

But then, none of that really matters, right? Because people are starving in every single country on this planet and we Americans have the guts to spend $40 or so million bucks trying to oust a president who exemplifies many of the problems with my country and our planet that have my heart pounding in anger at this moment.

We are Big Brother. We control what happens to ourselves and our human race. Down with Divx, down with greed. More forums. More discussion. More interest. Please.
