: There are certain films I cannot get on DVD because they are only on DIVX. This impinges on my right to make my choice.(No, I'm not a radical civil libertarian. Just following your logic.)

: In closing, let me say that this is a great thread and enjoy debating issues in an open forum. Sure glad we have ONE standard so we can all communicate. If the computer industry (no picnic in itself, I'm in it) was as messed up as the consumer electronics industry, we wouldn't be flaming each other today.

In retrospect, I think Divx was doomed to fail due to certain failings its creators didn't foresee. First, the entire concept of combining the concepts of pay-per-view (pure intellectual property) and a tangible medium required too much savvy from an increasinly ignorant public. Second, in an effort to leverage market share by obtaining exclusive distribution rights, it alienated the strong and growing following that DVD already had. I'm sure they had no idea what hit them when they encountered the massive ire and negative publicity that it did.

In the end, I think Divx was a day late and a dollar short, coming on the scene after DVD was well underway with its confusing product, and will probably never gain acceptance. It was a nice idea stillborn in a hostile world. Not many will weep its passing. Not I, once I move to a city with ready availability of DVD rentals. So much for the freedom of choice! ;) (roll the sad music)
