HBO's "From the Earth to the Moon" Posted by Nigel [IP: 206.241.18.3] on November 24, 1998 at 08:48:47: In Reply to: HBO's posted by Brad on November 23, 1998 at 20:48:55: Brad : What's the sound like on those discs? In other words, is this a DVD to demo a system to your friends with. The sound is pretty good - much better of course than when it was on cable - it is DD 5.1 though most of the .1 are really deep effects like launch-pad rumbles. It is not however on the same scale as, say, the recent SE of Tomorrow Never Dies which is a first class demo. :I just don't have the lack of will power to pony up $100 for the four discs. If you get it mail order at DVD Express (www.dvdexpress.com) it is 30% off so around $89 total. :Also, what's the total running time for all the discs...that might influence my decision whether or not to buy. OK there are 4 discs. The first three contain 4 episodes each. They are presented the same way as when broadcast, in groups of 2, with intro's to each group by Tom Hanks, with one set of credits after each double shot. I think they ran at about 50 mins per ep so that's about 200 mins per disc for 1-3, giving a total for them of about 600 minutes. The fourth is a hybrid DVD/DVD-Rom. The regular DVD stuff is more info on the US space programme, mission details, behind the scenes of making the series. I do not have a DVD-rom drive yet so I have not checked out that part yet, nor can I remember what's on it. If you were any sort of fan of the series and/or the space race, it is a worthwhile buy. I think I have watched each ep at least twice now from the DVD. Steve Tannehill has a more detailed review over on his DVD Resource site (www.dvdresource.com) : Thanks.
