The Prisoner - TV series on LD

Posted by Nigel [IP: 206.241.18.3] on November 24, 1998 at 09:30:36:

I am not a number, I am a free man!

Having just watched the first 3 discs of this series I really had to post a bravo and pat on the back for the great job Image have done with it.

I used to watch this series with my Dad when I was a kid. All I could get out of it was that the Lotus 7 driven by Patrick McGoohan in the opening sequence was really nifty and that I was scared by Rover, the big blobby guard-dog ball thingy (come on, I was only 5 or 6 at the time).

For a 30 year old series it technically stands up pretty well on laserdisc - colours are bright and the image sharp, especially in the outdoor scenes, which helps bring out the bizarre character of The Village (actually filmed in Port Meirion in Wales if my memory serves me correctly). There is the occasional drop out but it's hard to tell if that is the source material or the transfer.

The sound is of course mono, but on my Lexicon DC-1 in mono logic mode it sounds pretty good -- full and clean, with no "noise".

Some of the story lines seem a little hokey in the late 1990's but they are effectively executed.

For fans of this series this has to be a must-buy series. I checked with Polygram who said they had no plans to release it on DVD, so this may be your last chance.

I'll be seeing you
