: I've heard people here talking about region encoded DVDs. Can someone please explain to me what it is, and why DVDs have it? Thanks

Due to American film-industry - they don't want the movies to spread all over the world at the same time - they have coded the DVD's for each continent.
So f.i. USA have Code 1 and Europe Code 2.
You cannot play DVD-movies from the code 1
region on a DVD-player in a Code-2-country. But it's always a possibility
to change codes on the DVD-players and make them codefree. Then they can play all the movies from all code-regions.
But f.i. Pioneer's latest model DV-717
is perhaps impossible to decode.
