: If you're in the States (code 1) you probably don't need to bypass the regional coding because most of the times Code 1 movies will be released first. (Since Hollywood is in code 1) Even if you want to watch kung fu movies imported from Hong Kong, most of them are "all code", meaning that you can view them using any DVD players.

There are 6 region codes.

1 - USA
2 - Europe & Japan
3 - Hong Kong & south East Asia
4 - Australia & New Zealand
5 - Soviet Union
6 - China

Now there is also PAL & NTSC formats.

EG: If you are in the USA & want to play a disc which is region coded 2 in PAL
format, your DVD player will need to be
PAL\NTSC compatible as USA DVD players
generally are NTSC.

So if you want to play DVD's from all regions, PAL & NTSC formats then
your DVD player needs to be modified for
multi-region and be PAL\NTSC compatible.

Otherwise stick to Region 1 as DVD's in the USA are most readily available.
