Sound cuts out in Rolling Stones DVD

Posted by Keith [IP: 163.185.104.248] on January 21, 1999 at 15:22:49:

On the Rolling Stones Bridges to Babylon DVD, the sound cuts in and out when I am using the 5.1 decoder. If I bypass the decoder and run the audio directly into the TV there are no problems.

The pauses usually happen in the same place (for instance, during Tumbling Dice when they go to the camera on the guitar neck), but every so often it makes it through without a hitch.

There are no problems in the video and no problems with any other disc I own (including some pretty dirty and scatched up ones I have rented).

I tried cleaning it with DVD cleaner and returned it for a different copy of the same disc. Same problem.

On a friends system there was no problem, but he doesn't have a 5.1 decoder.

I am wondering if anyone else has noticed this or has any other suggestions? I think (hope) it is a problem with the compression of the audio on the disc and not my decoder, as no other disk (around 30 with 5.1 sound) has had any sort of problem.

I have a Yamaha Rx795 decoder and a Panasonic A110 DVD player connected with a 10m optical cable. It may be the cable length (but again, no other disc shows this problem) and 10m is within the spec for toslink cables.
