Posted by Dennis Pagoulatos [IP: 153.37.15.73] on January 21, 1999 at 15:47:39: In Reply to: Rotted LDs...has anyone ever tried... posted by Andy on January 11, 1999 at 16:38:14: Interesting you brought that point up; actually I noticed a disturbing degradation in the quality of my Independence Day THX LD (still one of my favorite 5.1 showcase films) it appears to be Laser rot, which is inevitable in LD's because of their size..DVD discs and CD's should not have laser rot for many many years if cared for properly, and DVD's should last even longer than music CD's because of some new fabrication materials or something like that (thedigitalbits.com has the details, interesting stuff) I don't think you can exchange it though, just care for the LD's that you have as if they were priceless artifacts, which I always do; they aren't indestructible :) I hope Fox will get off there butts and release an Independence Day Collector's edition on DVD, that's what I'll wait for instead of replacing my LD copy.
