Given that it has happened on 2 different copies it must be a disc problem with the 5.1 soundtrack. The direct connection works OK because I suspect that your DVD player is just outputting the PCM track in analogue.

I would do 2 things: check with the producer of the disc (see the back of the box for details) to see whether this is an acknowledged problem.

Second, report it to DVD Resource - Steve T over there keeps a DVD glitch list.
