Hey, James. Long time no see.

: Sorry...but thanks for being so blatantly rude.

Couldn't help it. I was in a foul mood, and with your smugness, it was too much temptation. I'll refrain from remarking on further foibles from your last post. :)

: Ummm that was a year ago. Who cares what they said about the past model. We are living in the now. The XBR200's FAR surpass the old Toshiba's and the new one's. Wait until the reviews come out. All one has to do is "see" any one of the new Toshiba's and the Sony next to each other. You make the call.

Actually, this year's models are even better than last year's: sharper focus, less hotspotting. And re: side-by-side comparisons, factory settings or store settings of brightness and contrast affect subjective perceptions of picture "quality". Most people will pick the brighter, more saturated picture regardless of whether it's natural-looking or not; compare the glaringly bright picture to a movie theater picture, and you'll realize you didn't get such a bargain. One thing I'll say about XBRs is they've always had very good blacks, at the cost of additional glare/reflections. But enjoy your scan lines which will always remind you that you're sitting in front of a TV set, not a small theater like the Toshibas.

: Once again, who cares. HDTV is not even close to being out. Look at it this way.
: 1. Digital TV is not EVEN in it's infancy. Who knows where it's going.

Actually, DTV broadcasts are beginning this month in the top 3 markets, top 10 by next May. RCA has announced a set-top decoder box for $700 retail. DTV is REAL, and it's coming to a city near you (but not near me; I live 30 miles from the middle of nowhere).

: 2. By the time HDTV is offered on a wide scale, there will be new technology in TV's. Think about it, what have we accomplished in the past six years? Technology jumps at a surprising rate. The so called HDTV ready 4:3 screen's of today will be absolute. As will
: almost all the set's sold toady.

New technology in the next 5 years that will obsolete current CRT technology? Think again, boy wonder. CRT, the current premier technology for TVs is the SAME technology as in the original TVs 40+ years ago. CRT has a LONG way to go before it will be obsolete. It has many technological advantages over ALL new display technologies including LCD, DLP, and plasma, including nearly infinite scalability, absence of pixel structure, multi-sync multi-resolution without jaggies or digital artifact, and higher resolution than any other technology. You seem to be confusing semiconductor technology with display technology; only the former moves at exponential rates.

: 3. If your so concerned with DTV and HDTV compatibility than buy a $22,000 Plasma TV cause the Toshiba RPTV's just wont cut it six years down the road. Nor will the Sony's. You'll end up getting another TV anyway. Don't make sacrifices now.

First of all, the current plasma TV picture sucks compared to CRT. You're right, your Sony won't cut it 6 years down the road, or even 1 year down the road. The Toshibas already have 480p capability for now, and native 1080i capability for later. Better TVs may be out in 5 years, but nothing close to obsoleting the Toshibas.

Incidentally, I'm SO concerned about DTV and HDTV as well as widescreen movies that I'm not considering 4:3 TVs at all; I'm debating between the 16:9 65" TW65H80 and a FPTV with a 100" 1.85:1 screen, both of which will still be working with 1080i when the signals are available.

: You get what you pay for. That's why the Sony externally blow's away all other RPTV's and internally nothing can touch it.

No, you sometimes DON'T get what you pay for. You paid $3800 for a 53" 4:3 RPTV w/o a line doubler, w/o DTV/HDTV capability. You're right, though... internally nothing can touch it... without voiding the warranty, anyway! :p

: Well....if you really think that saving a grand will make you happier in life, than thumbs up
: to ya.

Actually, saving a grand and getting a better TV (for movies now and prepared for at least the next 5 years) should make ANYONE happy. And when I am watching DTV in 480p and 1080i on my Toshiba in a year, and you're shelling out another $5000 for an HDTV-compatible TV, you won't be so smug.
