: : : : : If I buy a TV today, it has to be upgradable. I want it to last for more than a couple
: : years.

: :
: : So you're trying to say that HDTV will be the new standard and available in every market
: : in two years?

: : I would believe more like five or more. There are A LOT of people out there that
: : 1. Can't afford or
: : 2. Don't want the hassle of buying a new tv to replace their perfectly good one.

: : The longer it takes for the public to catch on, the longer it will be till HDTV is here in
: : force.

: : Don't get me wrong, I would love to have HDTV now but... I think it will take a bit longer
: : than two years.

: : I believe that by the time HDTV has taken over, I will have received more than my
: : moneys worth from my XBR200. Then I can buy a brand new RPTV.
: : By then there will be standards and the picture technology will be vastly improved and
: : much cheaper than today.

: : I guess that's not the most cost-effective way of doing things but at least I'll always have
: : the best.

: I don't know what the standard will be in two years. However, I do know that there will most likely be a standard by then. If I am buying a RPTV today,I want one that will allow me to upgrade to that standard without buying a new RPTV.

: As far as having the best set now, I've seen the XBR and I've seen the Mits 50803. You don't have the best picture now, nor will you in the future. I am not trying to slam the XBR. It has an exceptional picture. I am just saying that spending $3800 on a NTSC-only set is not wise.

I totally agree with you. Only HDTV can claim the best TV now, and once you see HDTV, you would hate to watch any other regular TVs, including the XBR which I was impressed by its picture before I saw the HDTV demo at Bestbuy in Boston. The HDTV set they demo is a Panasonic which is priced at $5500, and the price is coming down hopefully sooner than we expect, because one source said that the manufacturing cost was below $2000.
The amazing things about HDTV are extreme clarity of the pictures, the richness and saturation of colour, more details, most wonderfully, I would say, is that images look more three dimensional and when you watch it you feel like watching an iMax movies. It is trully wonderful. I believe HDTV will become popular very soon just like DVD. This Christmas will be a great season for the HDTV sale.
