new TV for low vision audience

My wife and I are both low vision and are looking at new TV sets. We now have a RCA 27'' CRT. To watch this size TV we either must sit on top of it or use a hand held monocular to view with any detail. We looked at a Sony 53s65 but I am concerned about picture quality while sitting within about 6 to 8 feet of the set. Does anyone have ideas other then a RPTV? Would an RPTV have viewing problems while sitting close? Any other comments, ideas...
