Remember VCRs? Please help pick one....

It is time to replace an old Mitsubishi model that I had which also included single-frame advance, a feature that I would like to have in the new player. Recently I looked at a local stereo retailer and narrowed it down to the higher end (non S-VHS) models from Mitsubishi, JVC and Sony. Sorry, I don't remember the specific models.

Does anyone have a suggestion on a model that is reliable, performs well, is relatively easy to program and sells in the $300 neighborhood? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

One last note: That retailer also was selling a JVC S-VHS model for less than the other models (had a lower list price too, not just a lower selling price) which made me suspicious of JVC performance/pricing, at least on this model. S-VHS is an option but the impression I got was that (for my situation) I could not justify the cost difference.
