I know the Panasonics are probably the best non S-VHS units, but the JVCs are nice. The JVC units have the best remotes and menu system along with great pictures from low end machines. JVC bulds the best S-VHS with that nifft time based correction. That said I got the Sony because it integrated well with my system (other Sont components). Mitusubishi still builds a good unit as well as the Prosacn with the digital comb filter. All capable but your best bets are Panasonic or JVC.
