Can Panasonic LX-900 laserdisc play DD/DTS discs?

Actually, my laserdisc player (Panasonic LX-900) predates Dolby Digital (AC-3) and DTS. It is pretty old.

With regard to the "RF Output" I mentioned in my earlier post, the manual for the laserdisc player states in bold letters "To Make Connection with a TV not having Video/Audio Input Connectors." Underneath that, the manual states "Use an optional RF Adaptor PV-RF15. (See the RF Adaptor operating instructions.) The playback audio is mono."

Thus, based on my reading of the manual, the "RF DC Output Connector" is some cheesy way to hook up the audio directly to the TV. It is apparently not an AC-3 type connection.

The truly frustrating thing about this is that I have called and emailed the people at Panasonic and asked whether my laserdisc player is capable of playing Dolby Digital and DTS encoded discs. They replied "it is very possible to connect your LX-900 VIA optical cable, but this will only give you Dolby Digital (AC3), but not the DTS. We do not believe that DTS software is available for laser discs, they are only available in DVD formats. For this reason, to enjoy DTS formats, you still have to obtain one of our 1998 DVD players: DVD-A110, DVD-A310, or DVD-K510." I received that response from Panasonic on July 29, 1998. Sounds like a sales pitch to me.

I later talked to somebody at a local audio store who told me that the optical cable on my laserdisc player (it plays laserdiscs, CDs, and CDVs)could be used for CDs but not laserdiscs. He said it was for "pcm" but not dolby digital (whatever that means). He said I was out of luck getting Dolby Digital or DTS out of my laserdisc player.

Then I called Panasonic and talked to someone about it. The first person immediately said yes it was possible. But when I quizzed her about it, she obviously had no clue, put me on hold, then another person got on the phone. This guy knew a little bit more but seemed like he was just guessing. Not at all what I had expected. So here I am wondering what to do. Thanks for trying to help me out.
