: Carlo,: I had a Fisher RPTV for 13 years and didn't clean it. Then I wanted to get a bigger set and was going to sell the Fisher to my son. I opened the set and cleaned all the dust out and then cleaned the mirror and lenses with a soft cloth and water. The picture looked like the set was new and more than doubled the brightness. The dimming effect is a very slow process and you won't notice it changing until it gets really dim. : How long you should go between cleanings depends on your environment. If you smoke then 6 months is reasonable, if you don't then 1-3 years would be reasonable. : Good Luck, Don : : I recently purchased a Mitsubishi VS50703 and I was advised by the salesman to have the tv set cleaned at least every 6 months. Is this true? It's going to be very expensive to do that every six months! : : Please let me know if the salesman is right. Thank you : : Carlo Additional Reply to Carlo & Support for Don's information posted on 11/28/98. On the average, (about every 3-4 years) an internal optic cleaning is recommended (with a soft cloth -like 100% cotton t-shirts or baby diapers - as lint free as possible), and use lukewarm water (with only 1-2 drops of vinegar, if necessary) for the 3 focus lenses, and a glass cleaner (for effectiveness and streak-free results) on the reflective mirror. Caution when cleaning the mirror, as many manufacturers mount the mirror with clamps and mounts that when pressing on the mirror in the center to clean it, may shatter the glass (underline the word carefully-with as little pressure on the glass as possible). And dittos on the time-frame for cleaning the optics when smokers inhabit the premises. Some rear-projection sets have been turned into dumpster material by chain-smoking customers in 6 months (or less). I also recommend (as the appropriate time-frame), the perfect opportunity to realign/readjust the sub-out convergence circuitry (setup)internally. Not the customer accessable adjustments (with the token-gesture horizontal/vertical white cross), but the complete internal sub-out convergence alignment procedure. This is definitely recommended only for that rare-breed of service technician who will treat your TV set like his own personal TV set-and have the patience of your guardian angel, to boot! Also, after about 3-4 years, the 'White Balance' of the Red, Blue & Green CRT's has probably drifted (with aging of the tubes, time, temperature, drive levels, etc.)and needs to be readjusted for photographic gray-scale black & white (and the end result-perfect color).
