DVD and Widescreen - WHY???

Unless I am horribly misunderstanding the controls, I have been able to switch the picture size on Starship Troopers on my Proscan 8680z's setup displays. It allows you to select between 4x3 standard, 4x3 letterbox, and 16x9 widescreen. I think this may bypass any selection that the DVD itself offers. Anyone know otherwise?
