JVC S-VHS recorder...

Posted by Ed Kuhlman [IP: 212.211.25.11] on December 11, 1998 at 00:23:40:

Dumb question....
Can any of you audio/video buffs out there tell me if I'm going "goofy"???
I just bought a new JVC S-VHS VCR (model HR-S4500U).

It replaced a JVC VHS recorder (model HR-D97OU, a very good unit at the time).
Here's the question... When I play back a standard VHS tape... either pre-recorded or one I made myself, the picture is considerably "granier" on the new machine than if played from the old old machine.

Although the old machine did not have S-Video connection, I am now using S-Video connections from the Sattelite, thru the new VCR, and into the TV. I notice no difference when using the standard Video-out (RCA jack style) from the VCR to the Video-In jack on the TV.

However... when I record a tape in S-VHS, the results are spectacular... no noticeable difference between the original signal and the recorded tape.

Is it possible that the S-VHS capabilities actually compromise the playback of stadard VHS tapes?????

I was so dissapointed, that I returned the first unit to the store I bought it from and exchanged it for another unit thinking that there was actually something wrong with it. But... the second unit performs exactly the same way.

I really like the unit... when used with S-VHS... but am quite disapointed at the standard VHS quality output.

Any input on the subject would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ed
