DVD and Widescreen - WHY???

: By the way, many DVD players have a mode that stretches out the picture sideways and works great for anamorphic movies on 4:3 TV sets. It is intended to fill the screen and do automatic pan and scan but most DVD's don't have the panning data built in. Thus the actual result is just overscanning off the sides.
