Well that would probably be a better situation to be in as far as overall purchase longevity, allbeit a more expensive one.I know the HD standards seem more ironed out, but as to when there will actually be more HD cable/sat programming than regular NTSC is up for debate. Some seem overly optimistic in my mind, me i think it's 5yrs at least before a significant (most) fraction of the 'dial' is HD. That gives you some time to get usage out of your Sony XBR. By that time there will be many more choices in full HD compatible RPTV and prices will drop even more. I was also almost in the same situation as you, my 5-6 yr old Sony 46" needed new convergence ICs, about a 400 bill. But if i was to buy now, i would probably buy a HD compatible of some such w/o HD tuner.
