Tim,

The S/P-DIF digital output (either Tos-Link optical or coaxial electrical) of a laserdisc player provides two signals - depending on the type of laserdisc played. Normally, the output will be 2-channel matrix PCM, that applies for discs which contain Dolby Digital or those which do not. In the case of DTS laserdiscs, the bitstream is placed on the disc instead of PCM, so the machine finds it and once again, spits it out of the digital connections.

However… Dolby Digital is found in place of analogue channel 2 (right) so is not emitted by the digital output - instead a dedicated Dolby Digital RF output is required, plus a demodulator which is normally in the receiver or a stand-alone unit.

You are in for a disappointment, unless you upgrade your LD player to include a Dolby Digital RF output or buy a new machine, there's no way to get at the data.

Although it may seem DTS discs are more convenient, they do have their dangers, if you use the digital output with no DTS decoder you'll hear full-scale digital noise (nasty) and neither do they have an alternative digital soundtrack. Also, if supplementary materials are to be included (running commentaries etc.), there can be no matrix soundtrack at all - this is why Signature versions of Universal titles are released in Dolby Digital.

The Dolby Digital discs can contain the Dolby 5.1 format, a running commentary and a PCM digital matrix surround soundtrack.

Stuart.
