Looking for mid-range DVD player

I have been away from the home cinema market for about a year and I wanted a reality check. This is what I have now:

Parasound P/SP1500 pre/processor
4 NAD 2100 power amps (mono L, C, R, stereo rear)
Mirage 790i front
Mirage MCSi center
Mirage MBS2 rear
MK MX-145 sub
Sony VHS
Sony 32" V-series TV (approx. 2 years old)
Adcom GCD600
Panamax max2000

Lately I feel a little better about renting DVDs, esp. since I see you can rent them at the local Blockbuster, and I want to add a DVD player (and) processor. Obviously the choice processor (unless I buy a DVD player with an on-board processor) for me is the Parasound PDD1550.

So here are my questions:

1. The PDD1550 (supposedly) can decode Dolby Digital and DTS. Does the source component that I choose as a DVD player need DD and DTS capability? In my mind (which may be utopian), digital is digital and the PDD
should figure out whatever I throw at it.

2. Does anyone out there have experience with the PDD1550?? Any advice, prices I should aim for, mail order places?, regrets, successes?????

3. I am tempted to buy a mid-price-range Sony DVD player. It is my understanding that DVDs are currently "only" single sided, double-wafer, and in the future they will be double sided. Is this true? Will double sided players
emerge in a few years? In my mind (again, utopian), I don't want to go overboard on the player because I expect
to upgrade then. What is the mid-range ($500-$1000) player of choice?

4. What is the story on DB25 interconnects? any recommendations? prices?
