Looking for mid-range DVD player Posted by Brad Ledford on September 30, 1998 at 12:05:04: In Reply to: Looking for mid-range DVD player posted by Jon on September 30, 1998 at 10:18:13: Jon, here are my 2 cents: 1. Digital is not necessarily digital. You would not, for example, be able to enjoy DTS surround sound if you purchased a DVD player that does not handle the DTS encoding scheme. 3. I purchased the Toshiba 3107 when it first came out not knowing much about the technology at the time. I just liked the idea of watching a movie on what appeared to be a CD. This player has been nothing but wonderful, though I have heard of some people having trouble with the lower-end Toshibas (jittering, skipping, bad toslinks, etc.). As for the double sided DVD topic, there are currently many double sided DVDs on the market, but typically one side is used for a widescreen version of the film while the other is used for Pan and scan (standard 4:3 aspect ratio). I do believe a few movies have been made to run from one side to the next (Das Boot?), but this does not seem to be the trend. Most of the longer films I have seen are "double-wafer" type. I think the appeal of remaining in your seat regardless of the length of the movie is too desirable for you to worry needing a automatic dual-side-reading type DVD player in the near future, unless movies keep getting longer and longer. It sounds to me like one of the Panasonic units (A110 and A310) would be ideal for your needs, rather than a Sony. The A110 has been well received among the audio/video community and can cough up the DTS bits for your Parasound goodies should you decide to go that route. You might be able to find a good deal on one of these on the net, while you wait for the utopian era of DVD standardization to arrive. I might just buy an A110 to give DTS a try when it comes across as a viable DVD format. At $399, you really can't lose.
