CLEANING REAR PROJECTION SCREEN

I have a Sony KPR 46 EX 32 rear projection t.v., over the last year or so I have noticed a build up between the two layers of the screen. Can the two layers of the screen be separated ?
Can the screen surface be cleaned?
A local repairer claims I need a new screen assy at around $800.00
Any help would be appreciated .
