Yes, I second the Panasonic A110 recommendation. Very inexpensive ( I got mine for $301 delivered from netmarket.com), has 5.1 and DTS output, and performs capably. These players are evolving rapidly and IMO you'll want to upgrade in 2-3 years. Don't spend a lot of money now, you don't have to, to enjoy great movie reproduction today.
