: I have a Sony KPR 46 EX 32 rear projection t.v., over the last year or so I have noticed a build up between the two layers of the screen. Can the two layers of the screen be separated ?
: Can the screen surface be cleaned?
: A local repairer claims I need a new screen assy at around $800.00
: Any help would be appreciated .

I have a five year old pioneer that I have cleaned a couple of times.

The first thing you might want to do it is verify that it is indeed the screen and not burn in on the CRTs before you go to all the trouble. What I did is take off the screen, turn it upside down, and seen if the marks are in the same spot. If it is the screen the marks should disappear or not appear in the same locations. If they still are, it is more than likely in the CRTs.

As far as cleaning the screen, I separtated to layers by removing the assembly, and gently rubbing a damp cloth between them where I can. I could have completely separtated them by removing the black tape bonding them, but did not want to replace it. But on mine it turned out to be in the CRTs and cleaning did very little.

Some things to be careful about:

- outer screen may have black dye on in on the inside part so be careful not to rub any away

- frensal lens (part behind screen) is very staticy and prone to pick up lint or dust, etc. Smart to lay assembly on sheet or something

- many cleaners can mark up screens, best to use damp cloth to clean

Good luck
