Since my old Sony SLV5UC power supply melted down beyond repair (after only 6 years), I went through the same decision you are now. On the same models in fact. This was just a few weeks ago.

I first went to the store thinking I was going to buy the JVC - impressed with the features (like recording S-VHS on a VHS tape, etc.). However, I found that the JVC, though it could do audio/video dubbing like I wanted, didn't have the S-Video connector on the front to conveniently connect my camcorder. I saw the Mitsubishi 790 on sale for $399 and compared the features. What I liked on the Mits was the extra S-video and input/outputs. Plus it was heavier and just looked built better. Since I still had an old Mitsubishi VCR from 20 years ago that my wife still uses every day and an old 35" Mits TV that's still going strong, I had more confidence in the 790, so I bought it.

I expected to see some improvement in the picture quality using the newer type heads, over my old Sony, but didn't notice anything remarkable. If anything, it seemed to have more noise. I also don't care for the bright display which you can NOT dim, which backlights my projector screen. I put filters in front of it to cut it down some. Maybe I just can't expect the same quality and features of a $1000 VCR when paying only $400, but I do miss them. However, I certainly can't justify spending any more than I did on a VCR these days, when they break down so quickly and they stop making the parts for them after only a year. I already spent too much I think, but I needed the S-VHS and dubbing capability for my Hi-8 camcorder, so what could I do? I just wish Sony had better reliability. Sorry to get off the subject. If you need any more info on the 790 let me know. It's not all that bad.

P.S. I'm still waiting to find anyone who might have a good power supply for the Sony.
