VCR Reliability: Mitsubishi v. JVC Posted by Patrick Cate [IP: 207.199.142.36] on October 29, 1998 at 00:39:04: In Reply to: VCR Reliability: Mitsubishi v. JVC posted by Ryan Elbertson on October 27, 1998 at 13:16:53: : Okay, I have finally narrowed down my S-VHS purchase to either the new Mitsubishi HS-790U series or the JVC 5400 something or other. While I don't wish to debate the merits of buying a S-VHS player, I would appreciate it if someone with any familiarity with these brands' reliability could share that info with me. As it stands now, the Mitsu model is about $100 more than the comparable JVC model. While the features are similar, I was just wondering if I should save with the JVC, or if the Mitsubishi was that much better if I should go ahead and pay the extra money? Any help in this matter would be appreciated. Reliability in VCR's is kind of hard to get nowaday's. Back in the day, VCR's were built like tanks and you could usually expect them (at least in my experience) to last several years. Now though all but the high end models mainly have a plastic build and use less than reliable parts. Between the two models you listed I don't honestly know which is more reliable, but some good insurance for your choice is to buy it from a place that offers a good extended warranty agreement. So if anything does go wrong it won't be much of a hassle to get it repaired. Other than that I'd say just get the model that has more of the features you want for the price.
