: : I have a Sony Hi8 camcorder and thought it would be a good idea to get an S-VHS VCR to go with it.

I was in the same position. I have a Hi8 camcorder and wanted the copies to be a better quality so that I wouldn't have to setup and use the camcorder each time we wanted to see some home movies. I bought my SVHS almost 3 years ago and have NEVER regreted it.

: : What I am curious about is how well this type of VCR will do playing movies in normal VHS format. Better, worse, no difference?

I have never done a side by side comparison. However I would say it is just better than "no diffence." The VHS tapes I've watched (and recorded on) appear to me to have the same quality picture as my last high end VHS machine. If anything, I believe that the picture is a little better. It could be just luck in the unit I bought or it may be that the higher end machine was better tuned.

: : Reading the list I see two models discussed: Mits. 790U and JVC5400 are there others to consider? Sony?

My unit is Hitachi. At the time I bought, it was a toss up between the Hitachi & Mits (780U I think). My high end VHS machine was a Mits flagship unit that I had ~8yrs before it quit working. Up until that point I had no problems or complaints with it. I picked the Hitachi over Mits because of minor preferences in the remote & features.

One objective comment. SVHS would not be worth the money for many people. But then again Hi8 is not for everybody either but you've choosen it over regular 8mm. Any regrets that you got the Hi8??
