How much to spend on RPTV in pre-HDTV days?

I am considering purchasing the Hitachi 50" Ultravision (1000 lines res, 3DYC filters, component input, etc.) RPTV. This set looks very good. Retails for $3000, can get for $2500. Even though this is a good price, with the advent of HDTV, how smart a purchase is this? I thought the extra lines of res. would help with HDTV converters. However, I am reading that the HDTV converter will only convert to 525 lines. Am I right in my logic? It would seem like spending $2500 on TV that will never be better than 525 lines is kind of a waste. I would appreciate any thoughts.
