Buy HDTV Now or Wait???

I would wait also, but for slightly different reasons. One of the big, immediate advantages of HDTV (and SDTV too) is that, with appropriate connections, it will allow you to view DVDs in their native 480p format, which is effectively a line-doubled version of what we see now. No new source hardware is required.

IMHO, there's really no point in buying any digital tv (whether a 480p SDTV or a 720p/1080i HDTV) until those connections are available. That is not likely to happen until the end of 1999 or first half of 2000. Then, if you've got the dough, there will be a value to such a TV whether or not there's much HDTV programming coming over the air.

What has to happen is for the working groups to settle on the connection and copy protection standards (i.e., the full Firewire spec and protocol). Recent progress on the copy protection spec was made (see the Stereophile Guide to Home Theater website this week for details).

That's what I'm waiting for.
