Chris,

Actually, I am shopping for a digital ready set, NOT a full blown HDTV (receiver included). It is my personal belief that the display technology will not change that much in the next 5 years. But, I do believe that the receiver hardware may change dramatically (set-top box, etc.). Hence, it is probably a safe investment to by an HDTV ready set and buy a set-top box when HDTV 1080i broadcasts become mainstream. No, I would definitely NOT purchase an $8000 dollar set with integrated receiver. But I have no reservations spending $4000 for an HDTV ready set that displays current DVDs in a spectacular manor (line-doubled). Not to mention that line-doubled (480p) DSS programs also look great. I guess what I am saying is that I look at an HDTV ready set as being equivalent to the very best NTSC RPTV money can buy at this time, with the possibility for future 1080i capability. It is a very cheap way to obtain a cheap but capable line doubler!

More than anything else, my main concern is whether or not future HDTV broadcasts will be 1080i or 720p. Only the $10,000 and up FPTV systems are capable of 720p at this time (and a few of the $8000 HDTVs w/tuner).

What do you think of the Hitachi 60SDX88B HDTV ready RPTV?

Thanks much for replying to my post.

Please give me any opinions (good or bad ;-) ) that you have.

BTW, $4000 is not a problem to spend for myself; however, I still don't want to buy something and have it be obsolete in a few months.

...Mike
