There is no performance difference between coax and toslink. Coax is little more robust, but since it is an electrical connection, it can facilitate ground loops.
I have A/Bd coax versus toslink and heard no differences. Also, with dolby digital sources, there is not even the possibliity for any even small jitter effects to be audible.
