As as part of my job, I've recently been through an extensive brand/model/cost/ benefit study of all the currently available front projectors. Although
it is a very difficult decision because of all the points made in the other follow-ups, we came up with a few fairly
major pieces of data.

As far as we can tell, if you want top quality, but not on an infinite budget, the best bang for the buck seems to be a combination of one of the Seleco 3 tube rigs with a line doubler made by a bunch of Apple renegades called DVDO. The doubler is a very high quality, limited functionality
piece that will retail for $599 soon....
they're on the web, check it out. The whole package would set you back around
$11-$12K. Mind you this is NOT the very
best stuff you can possibly buy in terms of quality or price or flexibility or any ONE parameter. It just seemed to us
that this was the best you could do if you were a true Fanatic on a reasonably
sane budget.
Caveat: I have not looked into Electrohome or the Zenith piece that other OEM's buy and rename. ( If anybody
knows more...Chime in!)

Another standout was a DLP (TI mirror)
unit offered by Vidikron. It is a very nice does-almost-everything piece that maximizes convenience at $10k list. I'm told however, that the 2 chip design that this one is based on will be eclipsed very soon by less expensive one-chip designs. Also I was warned that DLP chip/lens life is short and replacement costs high (don't know this for a fact, just a rumor).
As I discovered at the recent C.E.S.
there is no substitute for seeing a live
demo...in fact lots of them. So the advice to seek out dealers who can show you live pictures on live units and answer the tough questions about a unit's functional lifetime and ability to hold resale value is the best anyone can give you.
