I had a similar problem and was told by a cable tv installer to buy the best signal booster/splitter at Radio Shack. It has a dial where the amount of signal boost can be adjusted. It think it cost like $35 and needs to be plugged in. It has worked flawlessly with a remarkable difference in the picture.
