You can actually get cheap toslink cables. I use some from Fostex that are
about $9.00. The $50 monster versions are rip-offs, IMHO.

The bandwidth issue is as you say, the signal is digital, as long as the cable passes bits reliably, bandwidth does not matter. You will get less jitter in the signal with a higher bandwidth cable, but for Dolby Digital, the clock is not recovered from the incoming signal, so no signal jitter will affect the output of the DD decoder.
