All I can say is PIONEER DV-414! This is the best out there in my opinion and many other's. I had the Panasonic 310 and it had the very common glitch of skipping the first chapter after the layer change. Panasonic didn't have a fix so I exchanged to the Pioneer. The Pioneer has a more detailed and clearer picture than the Panasonic also. It is more evident on downconverted anamorphic widescreen video. Can you say excellent?! Other brands could learn from this $300 player on how to do anamorphic downconverting correctly. The famous inaccurate out of synch problem that has been reported has now been found to be the fault of the Sony 9000 pre-amp. This player is paired usually with this pre-amp because of the players ability to pass 96/24 bit digital audio directly to another DAC. Other players don't do this, but downconvert to 48/16 for copy protection. This copy protection specification must have been changed on the newer 4th generation players because the Pioneer does pass it now. In fact, the manual says it will pass it if NO COPY PROTECTION IS ON THE DVD DISC. I guess now that the protection will be on the disc which doesn't require limiting the players digital output. This spec. most likely was changed so that the new DVD-Video players will be compatable with DVD-Audio's 96/24 bit digital audio signals.
