I have found Monster Cable's splitters to be very effective.

In my area, our cable company only has one feed coming into the house's main cable junction box, and then I have four feeds going into various bedrooms. I recently had a satellite dish installed (couldn't qualify for locals, darn they're getting tough...) anyways, I kept lifeline cable and we diplexed the satellite and cable signal so that they ran on the same cable line into the bedrooms. While I was in the cable junction box, I noticed the cable company was using one of those 10cent splitters. Couldn't believe it...

I replaced it with a monster splitter, which I also have in the family room, and It's the single best investment I ever made. I cannot believe the difference in cable quality.

p.s. - I've used the $25, amplified, plug into the wall outlet splitters and I really didn't find much benefit above the monster splitter. I'm sure there's a better device available, but I'm happy at the price/point I spent. ($10.00)
