screen ratio setup?

Posted by Paul V [IP: 209.81.160.108] on December 29, 1998 at 10:36:21:

After finally getting my FPTV in a cabinet, converged and adjusted I tackled the issue of different screen ratios. Think I did this correctly, but could stand a little discussion on this part.

My FPTV is a SONY VPH-D50Q. To set up the ratios, I used the VIDEO ESSENTIALS screens that are marked with the different numbers (1.66:1, 1.85:1, etc.)
My process was to switch to one of the ten video memory banks on the SONY and then display the appropriate screen. I leap to the assumption that the screen is properly adjusted when;

1. the picture is at full width
2. the squares are square
3. the circles are circles

Each aspect ratio was then saved in a different memory location.

NOW, can somebody tell me if that is the correct assumption and process? VIDEO ESSENTIALS is very useful, but sometimes a little short on discussion of the different screen ratios.

At times, I find the whole screen ratio thing confusing. AND once in a while it seems as if the manfacturer may have mislabeled the DVD in the first place.

Comments please?
