Pan & Scan set up.

Hey there, just got an Onkyo 501 DVD player. I would like to try some of my movies in PS mode but can't seem to get it to switch, it just stays in letterbox format. I have a feeling I will still like letterbox better but want the option to switch !! I have gone through all the motions in the set up menus and can't get any movies to switch: Tomorrow Never Dies, Das Boot etc. Am I doing something wrong ?? Or do some movies just not allow you to switch ?
