What do I *need* to make a DVD system?

Using Mozilla/4.5 [en] (X11; I; SunOS 5.7 sun4u):

I'm new to the DVD market, but want to switch from my VHS system to DVD-Video. I have a new panasonic stereo TV and an older pioneer/sony rack sytem with good AR speakers. I am not sure what I will need to buy in order to get a DVD system up and running. I hear that the DVD player alone just won't do it, so I am thinking of getting a new surround sound receiver that will work well for DVD purposes. Will I need a special processor, or maybe there is a good all-in-one unit. I am also unsure of cableing and interconnections.

I am on a budget, but I may be able to build the system slowly. Can someone give me some advice on components and systems? I want to start with the DVD player first.
