Things you need:

DVD Player
recommended inexpensive models-
Panasonic DVDA110 $299.99 (if you can still find one.)
RCA 5210P $299.99
(Buy the Panasonic if you can find it.)

Dolby Digital Receiver
recommended inexpensive models-
Yamaha RXV495 $399.99
Denon AVR1700 $579.99
Sony STRDE725 $399.99
Kenwood VR209 $349.99

These two pieces coupled with six speakers will definitely suite all your needs for a Digital surround sound experience with little out of pocket.
