A couple of brands (Sony, and Boston Acoustic for 2) are beginning to coming out with speaker systems that plug directly from the digital coax out into a converter in the speaker and only cost $599.99. So you get all 5 needed speakers (Center, Left Front, Right Front, Right Surround, Left Surround, and a sub-woofer.)

I was at the Good Guys yesterday and saw them. They worked pretty good, volume/clarity was way better than I thought it would be, and for a smaller room it would great I think.

So all you would need is the DVD player with a Coax out (not optical, I think most DVD players have both), a TV, which you have and this $600 system.

I don't know of any of the cons to those self contained speakers except that of course if you don't really have a good stereo and are looking for a reason to upgrade, DVD is the best reason, while my brother already has a decent DENON stereo without pro-logic and dolby digital, this is a good way to upgrade.
