Regarding whether a new DVD player you buy is going to be 100% reliable. I don't know. I would have to say yes since the technology is moving into 3rd generation players. I have only had 2 problems with my Sony 7000 in 15 months and those were both dirty discs.

Now regarding the PC-DVD problem, what speed of computer are you playing it on?

I think that processor speed and what you've done with the computer and whether your hard drive is defragged are all possible factors.
Examples: I have a PII-450 from Dell with the same software drivers you have Cinemaster (note there is new drivers/software on their website, maybe you could try that, I am using the newer software, much better interface than before). If I boot the computer, play Starcraft, update quicken and then watch a movie in there as opposed to the home theater (because of the better half of the relationship :) I notice an occassional audio drop out, some bad, some not so bad.
But after having recently defragged the hard drive and watching something on the boot instead of after I have done several things I get flawless playback.

Just a thought...

Tom
