I own a DV-414. The most post about problems with the 414 seem to concern the layout and design of the remote and some occurances of audio sync problems. According to my lit, my 414 is 3rd gen and I haven't experience any sync problems yet. Neither have I experienced any other problems and have, as you stated, grown quite accustomedto the remote. It passes the true black test on the essentials disk, and I am totally pleased. It plays video Cd's as well as CDR's and CDRW's. Make your own choice but I don't think you'll be displeased if you picked up a new 414.
