Creative DVD and Sony STR-DE915

The DVD movie plays fine on my computer and my TV. I have a RCA connection for the TV input that goes directly to the TV. My problem is in the digital output. I bought a XLO/VDO enhanced cable. Length of 1 meter and RCA to RCA connections. The guy told me it was the digital coaxial cable I needed. My receiver is a Sony STR-DE915. It has 3 optical connections and a LD/DVD AC-3 RF connection. I plug the cable in the AC-3 and turn on the receiver. Picture is fine but I get no sound. I've made sure the receiver is set for the AC-3 RF input. I know there are 3 possible problem areas. The cable, my receiver or the digital output on the card. Is there any way to connect the digital output to an analog connection to see if there is output. Is there a setting to tell it to go through that port. I get no sound at all unless I play the sound out my sound card to the receiver via analog cables. Can you give me any help?
