As for the probability of a bad set, it seems to depend on the manufacture date. Most sets (not all) prior to Jan '99 are bad. Sony has been trying to fix the problem and I have heard that most sets manufactured in Feb/Mar '99 are good. If you just bought the set from a company with high inventory turns you probably got a Feb/Mar set and you will be ok. If you bought it from a Mom and Pop store you may have an older set, and are more likely to get a bad one.

Also, she may not notice the problem if she turns on a standard cable program. Have her turn to CNN or ESPN that has the ticker across the bottom. If the set is bad, the ticker will noticably bend in the corners. The bending can also be seen if you view a DVD in letterbox format.

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. If you just purchased the set you should be fine. If not, simply return it.
