I guess it would depend on how many of your collection produce this flaw. The instance of rot in my collection is very small, about 5 out of ~150, but a couple degraded discs are recent as well. I'm no expert, but i believe rotting is initially started by pressing flaws or impurities when disc is built. Trapped air between layers catalyzes the process over time. It's always been described to me as colored specks or line segments that flit all over image, typically starting at the start of a side and gradually spreading further into program material as rot progresses over time. I have this model of player, as well as a 79, and any disc that i suspected as rotting, would reproduce the same effects on both machines. That is not to say that there is not something wrong with your player, i've just personally never heard of this type of malfunction. But i suppose if enough of your discs are simultaneously showing up with defects, it can't be software. The clincher would be to take a selection of discs and try another player, just to rule out any software issues.
